Senior Backend Engineer (Java, SpringBoot) (m/f/d)

The company offers a range of financial services, including credit checks, fraud prevention, invoicing, and pre-financing, making it a key partner in the retail sector. They are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to drive the evolution of their core financial platform. The Senior Backend Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, testing, and operating backend services that support payments, invoicing, ledger flows, and financial data consistency. This role involves shaping the technical direction within the domain, making trade-offs that balance business impact, reliability, maintainability, and delivery speed. The engineer will also help decompose the monolithic financial platform into more manageable, domain-oriented services. Additionally, the role includes improving system quality through simpler architecture, better observability, cleaner APIs, automated testing, and reduced operational complexity. The engineer will use production data and operational signals to identify risks and propose improvements, as well as mentor junior and mid-level engineers by conducting code reviews and sharing architectural context. To qualify for this role, candidates must have at least five years of experience in software engineering, with a focus on building enterprise applications using Java and Spring. A solid understanding of software design principles, distributed systems, relational databases, SQL, and data modeling is essential. Proficiency in Italian and English is required for clear communication across disciplines. Candidates should also have experience building scalable, resilient, and highly available backend systems and take ownership of their work, challenging assumptions and translating improvement opportunities into practical solutions. Nice-to-have skills include a strong quality mindset with a pragmatic approach to reducing complexity in existing systems, using automated testing as a key enabler of reliable software delivery. Experience decomposing a monolith into bounded, domain-oriented services and designing event-driven architectures, particularly with Kafka or similar messaging platforms, is also beneficial. Additionally, experience mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards, as well as hands-on experience with AI tools for coding, code review, testing, documentation, skills, prompts, instructions, and plugins, would be advantageous. The role is based in Chiasso, offering a hybrid work model that combines on-site teamwork and remote work.
