Technical Lead - Payment Modules & Acquirer Integrations

Wallee is a Swiss payment‑technology provider whose platform handles online, mobile and point‑of‑sale transactions for thousands of European merchants. The Technical Lead, Payment Modules & Acquirer Integrations heads the squad that builds and maintains the components linking the platform to acquirers and payment schemes, while also shaping the technical direction of this critical area. On a daily basis the role combines technical and people leadership. You will own the architecture and roadmap for the payment modules, drive end‑to‑end acquirer integrations, manage technical debt in a mature codebase built on a custom Spring‑based framework, and guide the shift toward Java 25 and event‑driven, fault‑isolated services. You are also responsible for engineering standards such as design reviews, code quality, automated testing and observability, and you ensure production‑grade reliability through monitoring, alerting and incident response. Collaboration spans product discovery with the Product Manager, tribe‑level planning with the Head of Engineering, and joint work with other tech leads, architecture and DevOps teams. The position requires extensive experience and deep expertise. Candidates must have more than ten years of software engineering work, at least three years of team‑leadership, and a university degree in Computer Science or a closely related field. Mastery of Java and the Spring ecosystem, including a custom framework, is essential, as is strong knowledge of Hibernate/JPA and high‑throughput PostgreSQL performance. Proven hands‑on experience with microservices, covering service boundaries, APIs, asynchronous messaging and day‑2 operations, is required, together with a solid background in payment‑industry integrations (acquirer or scheme, authorization, capture, refund, chargeback, 3‑D Secure and PCI‑DSS awareness). A track record of reducing technical debt without halting delivery, solid software‑architecture skills (system design, ADRs, pragmatic trade‑offs), and a production‑oriented mindset (operational responsibility, incident handling and post‑mortem improvements) are also mandatory. Experience running services on AWS and Kubernetes, a genuine passion for coaching engineers, a builder's leadership spirit, and fluent English complete the core profile. Additional, non‑essential strengths are welcomed. Familiarity with e‑commerce platforms and payment plugins such as Shopify, Lightspeed, Shopware, Magento or WooCommerce is a plus, as is experience with event‑driven architectures and migration from synchronous designs. Exposure to ISO 8583 or ISO 20022 standards is also valued. The team is distributed across Switzerland, Lithuania and Ukraine, offering a collaborative, multi‑location environment.
