Power System Physicist/Engineer for the CMS HGCAL (EP-CMS-EC-2026-189-LD)

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, builds and operates the world’s most complex scientific instruments to explore the fundamental structure of matter. In the CMS experiment, the High‑Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is a cutting‑edge particle detector, and the Power System Physicist/Engineer will be central to its power‑system development, integration, testing and commissioning. The daily work involves managing the procurement of low‑voltage and bias‑voltage supplies, performing acceptance and stress tests on the delivered units, and supporting their commissioning during the mass‑assembly phase. You will collaborate with physicists and engineers to assess how the power system influences detector performance, devise noise‑reduction strategies, and later supervise the underground installation, cable routing, connectorisation and integration with safety and monitoring infrastructure. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree, PhD or equivalent experience in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. A proven record of testing, operating and troubleshooting power systems for complex devices, especially in high‑energy‑physics contexts, is required. Experience with large‑scale electronic procurement is essential, and fluency in spoken and written English with a willingness to learn French is mandatory. A valid driving licence is also needed. Experience with silicon‑ or scintillator‑based detectors, and the ability to thrive in multinational, multicultural teams, are considered advantageous. The position is a four‑year limited‑duration contract, fully onsite at CERN, with a 40‑hour week, tax‑free salary, extensive health and pension benefits, relocation support and the possibility of extension up to eight years or conversion to an indefinite contract.
