The role of Software Developer - Beam Optics is within the Linear and Non-Linear Optics (LNO) Section of CERN's Accelerator and Beam Physics (ABP) Group. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is renowned for its groundbreaking work in particle physics and accelerator technology. The team focuses on developing advanced software and analysis tools to ensure the precise measurement and correction of beam optics, which is crucial for the safe and high-performance operation of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The main day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining and extending the core OMC framework and toolset, exploring software solutions to enhance optics measurement and corrections, and updating accelerator model creation and correction algorithms. The role also involves developing new GUIs and analysis tools for use in the CERN Control Centre, participating in optics measurements, and contributing to the analysis of these measurements. Additionally, the developer will explore the viability of automating key measurement and analysis workflows. To qualify for this role, candidates must have a background in programming and software design, with specific experience in Python. Familiarity with version control systems like GitHub and experience in GUI development are essential. A professional background in Physics, Software Engineering, or a related field is required, along with either a Master's degree and 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. Nice-to-have skills include knowledge of particle accelerator physics and operation. The role offers a structured work environment with good prioritisation skills, the ability to test, diagnose, and optimise existing software, and a willingness to share knowledge and participate in knowledge transfer activities. Strong teamwork and communication skills are also valued. The position is based in a hybrid work environment with a 40-hour workweek, and it may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The team at CERN fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment, providing opportunities for professional growth and development. What the role asks for: - A professional background in Physics, Software Engineering, or a related field. - A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. - National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. - Never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. - Experience in Python. - Familiarity with version control systems and collaborative workflows (Github). - Experience in GUI development. - Proficiency in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
