CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is looking for a Shipping Officer to join its Shipping Unit. The position supports the institute's global supply chain by arranging the import and export of goods via road, air, sea and rail, handling items such as chemicals, radioactive substances and other regulated cargo. On a daily basis the officer will check and correct transport requests, set up shipments, and verify that all customs and dangerous‑goods rules are met. The role involves preparing and reviewing the necessary paperwork, liaising with carriers, freight forwarders and internal contacts, and monitoring the progress of consignments to guarantee on‑time delivery. In addition, the officer will advise CERN users on logistics options, draft quotations, approve invoices, resolve claims and provide responsive customer service. Continuous improvement of shipping procedures and logistics tools is also part of the remit. The ideal candidate has practical experience in coordinating international transport activities and a basic understanding of Incoterms. They should be capable of producing clear, structured procedures and possess strong people‑skills combined with an organized, priority‑driven work style. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as fluency in both English and French, is required. Applicants must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, hold a general secondary education diploma, and have no more than two years of professional experience since graduation in Commercial Business Administration or a related discipline. Prior CERN fellow or graduate contracts are not permitted. The contract lasts 24 months with the possibility of extension to 36 months, offers a hybrid working model, and includes a tax‑free monthly stipend, paid leave, health insurance, pension membership and relocation support where applicable. The role starts on 1 January 2027 and provides on‑the‑job training, including language courses, within a diverse and inclusive scientific community.
