Research Fellow- Centre for Big Data Research in Health

The Centre for Big Data Research in Health at UNSW seeks a Research Fellow to advance the prevention and handling of adverse events in hospital patients through cutting‑edge data science and artificial intelligence. Based in Sydney, the role is a full‑time, 35‑hour week position on a fixed‑term contract that runs until the end of 2028, with an academic level B salary ranging from roughly $133 k to $157 k plus superannuation and leave loading. Day‑to‑day work will involve designing and executing high‑quality studies that draw on extensive health‑care datasets. The fellow will apply statistical modelling, machine learning and natural‑language‑processing techniques to build and test predictive models, decision‑support tools and visualisations that aid clinicians. Responsibilities also include preparing research papers, grant proposals, ethics applications and conference talks, mentoring graduate students, and promoting reproducible research practices within a multidisciplinary team. The position reports to the Technical Lead of CardiacAI and does not carry supervisory duties. Applicants must hold a PhD in data science, biostatistics, computer science, health informatics or a closely related discipline, and possess a proven record of impactful research and emerging leadership. A solid grasp of study design using large observational health data, hands‑on experience with complex dataset management, advanced ML/NLP implementation, and software development is essential. Candidates should demonstrate strict confidentiality handling, familiarity with ethical privacy standards, and proficiency in multiple statistical and programming environments, as well as the ability to formulate novel, data‑driven health research questions.
