International Medical Secretary

The role of International Medical Secretary (IMS) at Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a pivotal position within the organization, which is dedicated to delivering emergency aid to those affected by conflicts, epidemics, and natural disasters. MSF operates independently and provides assistance based on need, regardless of factors like race, religion, or political affiliation. The IMS is the most senior executive medical leadership role, responsible for ensuring that MSF's medical identity, priorities, and ethical considerations are integrated into the organization's decision-making processes. The IMS's day-to-day responsibilities include providing strategic medical leadership to MSF International, ensuring that medical operations, ethics, and quality of care are central to the organization's humanitarian identity and strategic direction. This involves overseeing the International Medical Secretariat, which currently consists of 56 colleagues and a budget of EUR 6.6 million. The IMS also chairs relevant international medical-operational platforms, leads the International Medical Secretariat, and represents MSF on high-level external medical platforms. Additionally, the IMS contributes to the direction, policy, and priorities of the MSF International Office (IO) Leadership Team (LT). To qualify for this role, candidates must have a medical degree and significant experience in medical leadership, preferably within an international humanitarian context. Fluency in English and French is required, with proficiency in another language being a plus. The role demands a deep understanding of medical ethics, operational leadership, and the ability to navigate complex organizational dynamics. Experience in strategic planning, policy development, and cross-functional collaboration is essential. Nice-to-have skills include proficiency in another language, experience in global health discourse, and a strong background in medical ethics and operational leadership. The role is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and offers a full-time contract with a minimum term of three years, renewable once.
