PhD student

The University of Bern (UniBE) is looking for a PhD student to carry out a thesis that will advance multi‑variable, high‑resolution daily weather reconstructions for Switzerland and Europe. The research will focus on historic heatwaves, droughts, wildfires and floods, aiming to quantify the variability of weather and climate extremes in the pre‑industrial era by combining multi‑century observation‑based fields with climate model simulations. Day‑to‑day work involves statistical analysis of the reconstructed datasets, investigation of the meteorological and climatological conditions that generate extreme events, and assessment of their past impacts. The results will feed into the creation of climate‑extreme storylines and support attribution studies within the project. The ideal candidate holds an MSc in geography, climate science, environmental science or a related discipline and demonstrates solid abilities in statistics, quantitative methods and programming. An openness to interdisciplinary collaboration is also required. UniBE emphasizes equal opportunity and diversity, actively supporting female and minority researchers. What the role asks for: - MSc in geography, climate science, environmental science or similar - Proven skills in statistical analysis - Proven skills in quantitative methods - Proven programming abilities - Openness to interdisciplinary work (nice‑to‑have)
