Forest Ecology Research Intern (f/m/d)

The Forest Ecology Research Intern role at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) involves contributing to two key projects focused on adapting European forests to climate change. WSL is dedicated to environmental science and dendroecology, with a team of experts working on sustainable use and protection of the environment. The intern will support research on Picea abies and Cedrus atlantica, two species crucial for understanding forest adaptation to changing climates. The main day-to-day responsibilities include processing samples and conducting laboratory work. This involves handling tree-ring cores from various species and locations to create tree-ring chronologies. The intern will also assist in preparing samples for isotope analyses, ensuring precise and accurate records of all procedures. Additionally, there may be opportunities to analyze the results of these studies. To qualify for this role, candidates must be enrolled in or have recently completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental science, forestry, or a related field. A strong interest in forest ecology, dendrochronology, isotope analysis, or environmental research is essential. Proficiency in English is required, as it is the working language at WSL. Nice-to-have skills include a passion for environmental research and a willingness to contribute to projects aimed at adapting European forests to climate change. The location in Birmensdorf, approximately 20 minutes outside of Zürich, offers a supportive and collaborative work environment. The intern will be supervised by Dr. Valentina Vitali and Dr. Matthias Saurer and will be part of the Ecosystem Ecology group in the Unit Forest and Soil Ecology. What the role asks for: - Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental science, forestry, or a related field. - Strong interest in forest ecology, dendrochronology, isotope analysis, or environmental research. - Proficiency in English.
