Technical Studentship - Material & Surface Science 2027-1

CERN is seeking a Technical Student to join its material and surface‑science activities, where learning and discovery are tightly coupled. As part of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, you will work on projects that analyse, test and characterise materials and coatings, contributing to the broader scientific mission of the laboratory. In this role you will support experienced engineers, technicians and scientists, taking part in daily technical tasks under close supervision. You will assist with analyses, testing and characterisation work, share ideas and collaborate with an international, multidisciplinary team, and gain hands‑on experience while contributing to ongoing projects. The position requires you to be enrolled in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics or a closely related discipline, having completed at least three semesters (18 months) of study. Your university must require or encourage a practical training period, and you must remain a full‑time student throughout the studentship. A solid grasp of material and surface‑science fundamentals, curiosity, precision and a proactive learning attitude are essential, as are good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. You must be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State (excluding the listed countries), possess a good command of English or French, and not hold a PhD. The appointment is fully onsite in Geneva, starting 1 April 2027, with a 40‑hour work week and a contract lasting four to twelve months. You will receive a tax‑free monthly allowance of CHF 3 486, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual closure, comprehensive health‑insurance coverage, and possible travel and family supplements. Working at CERN offers a unique chance to develop technical expertise within a vibrant, inclusive community at the forefront of scientific research.
