The role of a Particle Accelerator Operator at CERN involves managing the operation of the world's most advanced scientific instruments, specifically the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and other accelerators. CERN is dedicated to exploring the fundamental structure of the universe by studying the interactions of fundamental particles. The Operations Group, which this role is part of, is responsible for the entire CERN accelerator complex and its technical infrastructure, ensuring the smooth execution of various experimental programs. The main day-to-day responsibilities include operating proton and ion accelerators, such as Linac3, Linac4, PSB, LEIR, and PS, on a shift basis. This involves ensuring the safe and timely execution of the physics schedule and achieving defined beam performance goals. Operators work closely with accelerator physicists to optimize the operation of these complex machines and to design, document, and commission various operational scenarios. Additionally, they contribute to the development of applications and advanced tools to support and improve operations, and assist with the operation of CERN's technical infrastructure during periods when the accelerators are not in use. To qualify for this role, candidates must have a Higher Technical or Administrative Diploma or equivalent in fields such as Administration, Computer Engineering, Data Analysis, or a related area. Initial work experience in a technical or scientific environment is required, along with experience in physics, engineering, or computing. Basic knowledge of software engineering in a modern development language environment is essential. Familiarity with automation concepts and a drive to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team are also necessary. Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is required, with a commitment to learn the other language. Nice-to-have skills include experience in operating large facilities and their associated hardware, such as measurement devices, power converter techniques, vacuum equipment, and PLCs. Working in controlled radiation areas is also an asset. The role involves shift work, including nights, Sundays, and official holidays, and requires a valid driving license. The position is based at CERN, which offers a competitive salary, comprehensive health insurance, and a relocation package. The contract is for a limited duration of 5 years, with the possibility of extension and eligibility for an indefinite position. What the role asks for: - Higher Technical or Administrative Diploma or equivalent in Administration, Computer Engineering, Data Analysis or a related field. - Initial work experience in a technical or scientific environment. - Experience in physics, engineering or computing. - Basic knowledge of software engineering in a modern development language environment. - Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language. - Valid driving licence.
