The position is a Line Mechanic 1/C or 2/C with NY State Electric & Gas Corp (NYSEG), a subsidiary of Avangrid and part of the global Iberdrola Group. NYSEG delivers electricity and gas across New York and contributes to the company's broader push toward renewable, low‑emission energy for millions of customers worldwide. Working under direct supervision, the mechanic tackles the most complex construction and upkeep tasks on live conductors, towers and related gear. Typical duties include installing all varieties of polyphase transformers, performing phasing and phase‑rotation checks, and carrying out distribution and transmission switching as needed. The role also involves locating and clearing ground faults and open circuits, fitting instrument transformers, and installing, removing, connecting or disconnecting electric and gas meters. In addition, the employee may operate company vehicles, oversee the work of other linemen or groundmen, and perform other related tasks as assigned. Candidates must bring at least three years of experience as a Second‑Class Lineman, or an equivalent background proven by a recognized test. A minimum education level comparable to two years of high school is required. Applicants need solid familiarity with NYSEG's line practices, standards, and the specific layout of the distribution and transmission network in their assigned area, as well as a sound grasp of electrical fundamentals relevant to construction and maintenance. Knowledge of the company's safety rules, approved rescue methods, and the ability to provide practical first aid are essential. The role also demands eligibility for an automobile operator's licence and the physical capacity to pass a company‑mandated medical exam, including colour perception, strength and endurance for demanding outdoor work. Flexibility to work irregular or extra hours and to adapt to unusual or special site conditions is also mandatory. The job is based in Geneva, NY, with an hourly wage ranging from $45.78 to $62.68. Employees may be called upon for system‑emergency duties or to support NERC Reliability Standards compliance in critical infrastructure protection or operations planning, depending on business needs. Avangrid promotes an inclusive workplace, offering equal opportunity regardless of personal characteristics, and provides reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities. The position offers exposure to a leading energy firm that is actively shaping the future of clean power. What the role asks for: - Minimum 3 years experience as Second‑Class Lineman (or equivalent) - Pass test confirming required experience - Education equivalent to two years of high school - Knowledge of NYSEG line practices and standards - Knowledge of local distribution and transmission line layout - Understanding of electrical fundamentals for transmission/distribution - Familiarity with Company Safety Rules and practical First Aid - Ability to obtain automobile operator's licence - Pass required physical exam (including colour perception) - Willingness to work irregular/extra hours and special conditions
