The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is looking for an Applied Physicist to join the ATLAS team, which is responsible for upgrading the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector. The position focuses on the integration of electronics for the new RPC chambers that will form the inner layer of the barrel muon system. Daily tasks involve overseeing the production and verification of front‑end, low‑voltage and connector boards, managing quality‑assurance procedures, and ensuring that these boards are correctly installed in the RPC modules. The role also requires coordinating tests before and after the chambers are placed in the ATLAS cavern, acting as the primary liaison with Technical Coordination during installation, and leading the commissioning phase after the detectors are in place. Troubleshooting of problematic chambers and support for debugging activities are part of the routine. Candidates must hold a doctorate or an equivalent level of experience in physics or a closely related discipline. Proven expertise in designing, debugging and operating fast‑response electronics for gas‑based detectors is essential, as is hands‑on experience with the commissioning of such detectors. A solid understanding of the physics governing gaseous detectors, the ability to work effectively within small to medium sized teams under a leadership role, and fluency in spoken and written English are required. Applicants should also be prepared to acquire French language skills during the contract. The appointment is a four‑year limited‑duration contract, with the possibility of extension up to eight years and eventual eligibility for a permanent position. Work is fully onsite, includes exposure to radiation zones and underground installations, and may involve night shifts, weekends and public holidays. A valid driving licence is mandatory. The role offers a tax‑free salary that rises with relevant experience, 30 days of annual leave plus a two‑week shutdown, comprehensive health coverage, pension membership, family allowances and a relocation package when needed. What the role asks for: - PhD or equivalent in Physics or related field - Experience designing fast electronics for gaseous detectors - Experience commissioning gaseous detector systems - Knowledge of gas‑detector physics - Fluent spoken and written English - Commitment to learn French - Valid driving licence - Availability for night, weekend and holiday work
