NOMIS Foundation ETH Postdoctoral Fellowship

The NOMIS Foundation–ETH Fellowship Programme offers a post‑doctoral position at ETH Zurich within the Centre for Origin and Prevalence of Life (COPL). The centre brings together several departments to explore fundamental questions about how life began and how widespread it may be, providing shared workspaces and encouraging collaborations that cross traditional disciplinary borders. Fellows join an international community of leading researchers linked through the NOMIS network, the Swiss National Centre for Competence in Research (NCCR) Genesis, and the Origins Federation. Their daily work includes taking part in centre‑wide events, contributing to NOMIS activities, building independent research connections, and potentially supporting teaching duties within their host group as defined in the application. The fellowship lasts three years, with a possible fourth year after a mid‑term review, and the start date is planned for 2027. Candidates must have submitted their PhD thesis and be within three years of receiving the doctorate, although exceptions may be considered. Preference is given to those who already have a first post‑doctoral experience or interdisciplinary training and who hold an affiliation with an academic or research institution. Applicants need to be able to attend a remote interview, and each host professor may nominate only one candidate per round, with at least one host guaranteed an ETH position for the full term. Hosts are required to provide the fellowship allowance and any extra support needed for a fourth year if the review is successful. The position is based at ETH Zurich, which supplies public‑transport season tickets, car‑sharing options, sports facilities, childcare services, and attractive pension benefits. The institution emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, creating a supportive environment for high‑risk, interdisciplinary research.
