The position is for an Embedded Software Engineer who will help modernise the Large Hadron Collider's Collimator Control System. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, operates the world's most powerful particle accelerator and relies on sophisticated machine‑protection software to keep the facility safe and running smoothly. In this role you will create and sustain control applications built on the FESA framework, making sure they fit into CERN's accelerator control architecture. You will take part in commissioning activities, run functional, integration and regression tests, and verify interlocks and fail‑safe mechanisms before they go live. The job also involves linking the control system to the alarm server, building high‑level tools for better usability and real‑time monitoring, and providing diagnostic interfaces that streamline intervention procedures. The ideal candidate must be a national of a CERN Member or Associate State and hold a Master's degree with two to six years of post‑graduation experience, or a PhD with up to three years of experience, in Controls Engineering, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline. You must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Proven experience with real‑time or distributed control systems, especially in accelerator, industrial automation or scientific settings, is required, as is a track record of working in complex industrial or technical environments. You should have built expert GUIs or web tools for control and diagnostics, be comfortable with Git and CI/CD pipelines, and be proficient in C++ while also knowing Python. Strong analytical, troubleshooting and documentation skills, together with the ability to work proactively and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, are essential. Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and you should be prepared to learn French. The appointment is fully onsite at CERN, starting 1 January 2027, for an initial 24‑month contract that may be extended to 36 months. Working hours are 40 hours per week. The role offers a monthly net stipend of CHF 6 372 (Master's) or CHF 7 004 (PhD), 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual shutdown, comprehensive health coverage, pension membership, family allowances, relocation support, and on‑the‑job training including language courses. You will join a diverse, inclusive engineering community that values collaboration and innovation while contributing directly to the LHC's mission. What the role asks for: - National of CERN Member or Associate State - Master's degree + 2‑6 years experience or PhD + ≤3 years - Background in Controls, Computer or Electronic Engineering - No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract - Experience with real‑time or distributed control systems - Experience in complex industrial or technical interventions - Developed GUIs or web tools for control diagnostics - Familiarity with Git and CI/CD workflows - Proficient in C++ programming - Knowledge of Python scripting - Fluent spoken and written English - Willingness to learn French (nice‑to‑have)
