One Server: What is needed?

The position focuses on designing a single, all‑purpose server that will replace an existing NAS and host a variety of virtual machines, such as a firewall/router, a Windows‑based banking workstation, and several Linux services for web, backup, and VPN functions. The employer’s aim is to build a platform capable of supporting these workloads while providing a substantial amount of storage for media, backups, and personal files. Daily duties revolve around determining the required processing power, memory, and disk capacity to run the defined guests efficiently. The planner must calculate a minimum of eight terabytes of space, ultimately targeting sixteen terabytes to avoid future shortages. Tasks also include selecting a RAID configuration that survives the loss of two drives, arranging hot‑swap capability, and ensuring the system can be maintained remotely without interrupting service. Essential qualifications involve a solid grasp of server reliability, the ability to configure redundant storage, and competence in setting up virtual environments that accept many operating systems. The candidate should be comfortable with networking hardware that can act as both router and LAN interface, and be prepared to monitor and report hardware or VM errors promptly. Experience with quiet, low‑power hardware and the capacity
