Development Engineer (contract)

Roche’s System Development group creates and refines the workflow that brings together hardware, software, consumables and reagents to verify diagnostic instruments on a global scale. As a Development Engineer you will join a cross‑functional team that builds complex nucleic‑acid purification, PCR and sequencing platforms, contributing to the company’s mission of preventing, stopping and curing disease. Your daily work will involve planning and carrying out defined work packages, reporting progress and escalating issues when needed. You will act as the technical lead for a specific area, guiding colleagues and producing the required documentation, procedures and technical reports. The role also includes designing and running experiments in biosafety level 1 and 2 labs, drafting test cases from product requirements, executing them, analysing outcomes and preparing the associated regulatory paperwork. Additional tasks cover troubleshooting, debugging and upgrading existing systems, maintaining software records and coordinating activities with hardware, consumables and assay development teams. The position requires a degree in a life‑science discipline such as biology, biotechnology, biomedical informatics or a related engineering field, or comparable professional experience. Candidates should be eager to solve technical challenges, comfortable working in a highly regulated environment and familiar with biosafety level 1/2 laboratory practices. A strong interest in software and engineering tools, solid English communication skills and a proactive, solution‑focused attitude are essential. Experience in laboratory diagnostics or service and support, especially with hardware and software, and proficiency in German are considered valuable assets.
