The Linear and Non‑Linear Optics (LNO) Section of CERN's Accelerator and Beam Physics (ABP) Group is looking for a Software Developer, Beam Optics. The team works on the Optics Measurement and Correction (OMC) framework that supports the commissioning and operation of the High‑Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL‑LHC). The role contributes directly to the safe, reliable and high‑performance running of the collider and to the delivery of its new physics programme. On a daily basis you will keep the core OMC software alive, add new features and improve existing tools used during LHC commissioning. You will investigate software approaches that make optics measurements and corrections faster and more capable, and you will adapt accelerator‑model creation and correction algorithms to take advantage of fresh simulation tools. Automation of key measurement and analysis workflows will be explored and, where feasible, implemented. In addition, you will design and build new graphical user interfaces and analysis utilities that will be operated from the CERN Control Centre during optics commissioning, and you will take part in the analysis of optics data from the accelerators. The position requires solid programming and software‑design skills, especially in Python, and familiarity with collaborative version‑control systems such as GitHub. Experience in developing graphical user interfaces is essential. Candidates must be fluent in either English or French and be prepared to learn the other language. Eligibility is limited to nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States. Applicants need a professional background in Physics, Software Engineering or a related discipline, together with either a Master's degree and 2‑6 years of post‑graduation experience, or a PhD and no more than 3 years of post‑graduation experience. Previous CERN fellow or graduate contracts are not allowed. A background in particle‑accelerator physics is advantageous but not mandatory, as is a genuine interest in creating and maintaining software for applied physics. The role is based at CERN with a hybrid work model, 40 hours per week, and may involve night, weekend or holiday work when required. The contract lasts 24 months, extendable to 36 months, and includes a monthly net stipend (CHF 6 372 for a Master's holder, CHF 7 004 for a PhD holder), 30 days of paid leave, health‑insurance coverage, pension membership, family allowances, relocation support and language training. What the role asks for: - Python programming proficiency - Experience with GitHub version control - GUI development experience - English or French fluency, commit to learn the other language - National of a CERN Member or Associate State - Master's degree + 2‑6 years post‑grad experience - PhD degree + ≤3 years post‑grad experience - No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract - Background in Physics or Software Engineering - Nice‑to‑have: knowledge of accelerator physics - Nice‑to‑have: interest in applied‑physics software
