The role of a Developer for the CMS Level-1 Trigger involves contributing to the development and upgrade of the CMS Level-1 (L1) trigger system. This system is crucial for the High-Luminosity LHC phase, using advanced FPGA processors and high-bandwidth networks to enhance online algorithms, such as Particle Flow reconstruction. The team at CERN is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of nuclear research, and this position is central to that mission. The main day-to-day responsibilities include developing algorithms for the L1 trigger, integrating and maintaining contributions from other developers, and evaluating the physics performance of these algorithms. Additionally, the role involves developing monitoring systems, participating in hardware testing and installation, and collaborating closely with the CMS L1 trigger groups. Presenting project progress and results at various meetings and conferences is also a key part of the job. To qualify for this role, candidates must have experience in FPGA firmware development using HDL and High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools, as well as experience in data analysis, preferably in high-energy physics. Practical experience in developing and applying machine learning solutions is also required. Proficiency in software development using C++, Python, and Git is essential, along with knowledge of data analysis tools and techniques, including ROOT and machine learning frameworks. Nice-to-have skills include familiarity with trigger or data acquisition systems and their associated hardware, such as high-speed optical links. Experience with Vivado Design Suite, Vivado/Vitis High-Level Synthesis (HLS), GitLab, and continuous integration workflows would be advantageous. Strong collaborative skills and effective communication are essential, as is proficiency in spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French. The role offers a hybrid work environment and involves interventions in underground installations. The team at CERN values diversity and fosters an inclusive environment, making it an exciting place to work. What the role asks for: - Experience in FPGA firmware development with HDL and High-Level-Synthesis (HLS) tools. - Experience in data analysis, preferably in the field of high-energy physics. - Practical experience in the development and application of Machine-Learning solutions in the real world. - Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) and quality assurance techniques and tools. - Knowledge in software development with C++, Python and Git. - Knowledge in data analysis tools and techniques, including ROOT and Machine-Learning Frameworks. - Nationality of a CERN member or associated member state. - A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience after graduation or a PhD with no more than 3 years of professional experience after graduation. - No previous CERN Fellow or Graduate contract. - Experience with triggers or data acquisition systems and their associated hardware, such as high-speed optical connections, would be an advantage (nice-to-have).
