Doctoral Student Programme 2027-1

The Doctoral Student Programme 2027‑1 offers a up‑to‑36‑month position to conduct a PhD thesis within CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where cutting‑edge science, technology and innovation intersect. As a member of an international community of experts, you will work in a setting that blends research and engineering at the very front of discovery. Your daily work will involve carrying out doctoral research in partnership with CERN and your home university, taking part in ongoing projects that span applied physics, computing, engineering or related technical domains. You will regularly present and document your findings to meet both academic and research goals, while learning alongside world‑class scientists, engineers and technicians in a multidisciplinary, multicultural team. Candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral programme in a relevant discipline such as applied physics, engineering, computing or a closely related field, and must have already started their PhD at the time of application. You need a solid theoretical background in your area, curiosity, precision and a proactive learning attitude, together with good communication skills and the ability to collaborate in a diverse team. Eligibility requires citizenship of a CERN Member or Associate Member State (excluding certain nationals due to quota limits) and proficiency in English or French. Your university must endorse the research as part of your thesis. The contract is full‑time (40 hours per week), beginning 1 April 2027, with a renewable term of 12 to 36 months and the possibility to extend across four consecutive years. Benefits include a tax‑free monthly allowance of CHF 3 907, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual closure, comprehensive CERN health insurance, a family supplement where applicable, and travel expenses to Geneva on arrival. The role is fully onsite in Geneva, offering a vibrant, inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued and scientific curiosity can flourish.
