The Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) at the University of Basel offers a full‑time, four‑year PhD position that can start as early as 1 January 2027. The project focuses on circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) to investigate strongly interacting electronic phases in atomically thin, layered materials such as twisted graphene and transition‑metal dichalcogenides. By combining high‑impedance superconducting resonators with low‑frequency transport and pump‑probe techniques, the work aims to reveal quantum capacitance, kinetic inductance and, ultimately, hybridised photon‑electron states. On a daily basis the PhD candidate will design, fabricate and characterise high‑frequency resonators, integrate them with 2D material devices, and perform transport measurements that probe electron‑electron interactions. The role also includes developing and running pump‑probe experiments adapted from qubit research, analysing data, and contributing to the interpretation of exotic coupling phenomena. Collaboration with the Quantum Coherence Lab and other SNI groups will be essential for advancing the experimental programme. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Physics, Nanoscience or a closely related discipline and demonstrate fluency in English. The position requires a strong curiosity and the willingness to commit to a challenging, long‑term research effort. While not mandatory, prior experience with radio‑frequency experiments, superconductivity, layered‑material handling, or Python (or similar) programming will be considered advantageous. The successful researcher will join a vibrant scientific community within the Quantum Coherence Lab and the broader SNI PhD school, which hosts roughly 30 active scientists across quantum physics, chemistry, nanotechnology and life‑science fields. The institute promises a competitive employment package, a supportive and recognised community, and ample opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and professional growth. Applications are accepted until 31 December 2026, and the vacancy may be filled at any time. What the role asks for: - Master's degree in Physics, Nanoscience or related - Proficiency in English - Experience with radio‑frequency experiments (nice‑to‑have) - Experience with superconductivity (nice‑to‑have) - Experience with layered materials (nice‑to‑have) - Python or similar programming experience (nice‑to‑have)
