The role is a Doctoral Position in Advanced Bioelectronic & Electrical Conversion Research within the Biotechnology and Bioengineering group at ETH Zurich. The group, led by Prof. Dr. Martin Fussenegger, focuses on integrating synthetic biology, nanotechnology, and bioelectronics to develop next-generation bioelectronic medicine. The aim is to create programmable cells that can respond to various stimuli for therapeutic applications. The main day-to-day responsibilities involve working on PhD projects that combine catalyst engineering, computational simulation, bioelectrode device fabrication, and electrical engineering. This work will develop bioelectronic interfaces for closed-loop programming of cellular behavior and real-time monitoring of metabolic activity. Additionally, there will be opportunities to design novel bioelectronic implants and develop specialized control software. Candidates must have a background in physics, material science, or chemistry. Essential qualifications include expertise in bioelectronics or software simulations, or a strong willingness to acquire these skills. Solid knowledge of electrochemistry and materials chemistry is also required. Candidates should be eager to collaborate closely with molecular biologists and bioengineers and demonstrate a strong academic record with the ambition to pursue a career in industrial R&D or entrepreneurship. Nice-to-have skills include a strong willingness to acquire expertise in bioelectronics or software simulations.
