Sr. Surface Technology Engineer

Nobel Biocare, a worldwide leader in implant innovation, is looking for a Senior Surface Technology Engineer to help shape the next wave of material and surface solutions for dental and orthopedic applications. The position sits within a global R&D team that creates technologies aimed at improving patient outcomes across the globe. The engineer will act as the go‑to authority for core surface processes, overseeing their upkeep and seeking ways to enhance them. Daily tasks include steering the creation of new materials and surface treatments while following the company's design‑control and idea‑to‑market frameworks, scouting emerging technologies, and evaluating their potential. The role also involves running feasibility analyses, guiding the hand‑over of novel processes to production, and staying current with scientific publications, market trends, and competitor activities. Close collaboration with product management, intellectual‑property groups, R&D, suppliers and key opinion leaders is essential, as is providing technical mentorship and knowledge transfer throughout the organization while maintaining compliance with medical‑device quality standards. Candidates must hold an advanced qualification in Materials Science, Surface Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering or a closely related discipline. They need at least seven years of hands‑on experience in materials science, surface engineering and the development of manufacturing processes, together with a minimum of three years within the regulated medical‑device sector, preferably in dental or orthopedic fields. Proven mastery of titanium alloys, ceramics, anodisation, sandblasting and related surface‑treatment methods is required, as is a solid grasp of how materials interact with bone or mucosal tissue and the underlying chemistry. Familiarity with ISO 13485, ISO 14971, design‑control procedures and the creation of technical documentation is mandatory, as is a track record of improving production methods under regulatory constraints. The role also calls for a good understanding of dental clinical workflows, proficiency with SAP, the GRANTA Materials Database, data‑analysis and statistical software, strong analytical and technical‑writing skills, and the ability to operate effectively in multicultural, matrix‑structured teams. Fluency in English is essential; German language skills are considered a plus.
