CERN's Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings Group is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for Vacuum Technology to support the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. The role involves designing, developing, and testing ultra-high vacuum equipment for the ATLAS, ALICE, CMS, and LHCb experiments. The engineer will work on projects from initial concepts through to installation and operational follow-up, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. The main day-to-day responsibilities include designing and developing precision mechanical equipment for ultra-high vacuum applications. This involves creating 3D CAD models and performing structural, thermal, and modal analyses. The engineer will also plan and carry out laboratory tests, including leak detection and vacuum performance measurements. Additionally, the role involves working with CERN workshops, suppliers, and technical teams to support production and quality control, as well as contributing to the installation and commissioning of vacuum equipment. To qualify, candidates must have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Proficiency in mechanical design and CAD (CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or similar) and engineering simulation and analysis (ANSYS or similar) is required. Experience in precision mechanics, manufacturing, assembly, or testing, as well as familiarity with vacuum technology or laboratory environments, is essential. Knowledge of ultra-high vacuum systems, leak detection, or residual gas analysis is an advantage. Nice-to-have skills include a good foundation in mechanical engineering and design, and an interest in developing expertise in ultra-high vacuum and precision engineering. The role requires a practical, curious, and solution-oriented approach, as well as clear communication and a commitment to high-quality engineering. Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is necessary, with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language. The position is based at CERN, offering a unique scientific environment and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research. The role is fully onsite and involves work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. CERN offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a monthly net stipend, paid leave, health insurance, and a relocation package. The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months. What the role asks for: - Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. - Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) with a Master's degree and 2 to 6 years of professional experience after graduation or a PhD with no more than 3 years of professional experience after graduation. - Experience in mechanical design and CAD (CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks or similar). - Experience in engineering simulation and analysis (ANSYS or similar). - Experience in precision mechanics, manufacturing, assembly or testing. - Knowledge in vacuum technology or laboratory environments. - Language skills: English or French in writing and speaking, with the commitment to learn the basics of the other language.
