The Safety Engineer role is part of CERN's Technical Coordination team for the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. In this position you will join the CMS Safety Team, learn the organisation's safety systems, alarms, hazard‑identification and risk‑assessment procedures, as well as the computing tools used for CMS infrastructure. Your daily work will support the CMS Large Experiment Group Leader in Matters of Safety (LEXGLIMOS) and cooperate closely with the Technical Coordination group. You will help implement CERN's safety goals inside CMS, draft and review risk assessments and procedures for projects, works, areas and activities, and keep the Safety File up to date, especially for the LS3 upgrade. The job also includes checking fire‑safety compliance of materials for the Phase II upgrade, carrying out incident analyses, following up on corrective actions, and assisting with emergency‑preparedness tasks such as organising planned evacuations. Experience in multidisciplinary or team‑based projects, strong written and spoken communication, and the ability to produce safety documentation and give oral presentations in either English or French are essential. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in safety or industrial engineering, and have no more than two years of professional experience since graduation. A valid driving licence and willingness to work nights, weekends and official holidays when required are also mandatory, as is the ability to obtain medical clearance for work in radiation areas and underground installations. Additional strengths that are valued include prior work in occupational safety and risk management, familiarity with safety projects in large scientific facilities, and a proactive, organised, detail‑oriented approach that enables you to juggle several tasks independently and within a team. The contract is fully onsite for 24 months, with a possible extension to 36 months, and the start date is set for 1 January 2027. The role offers a monthly net stipend of CHF 5 266 or CHF 5 793 depending on your degree, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual closure, comprehensive health insurance, pension membership, family allowances and a relocation package where applicable, together with on‑the‑job training and language courses.
