The position of Applied Physicist, ATLAS Muon LS3 Integration and Installation Manager is based at CERN, the European laboratory where physicists and engineers explore the fundamental makeup of the universe with the world's most sophisticated instruments. In this role you will steer the planning and execution of the ATLAS Muon detector upgrades and maintenance that will take place throughout the Long Shutdown 3 period (2026‑2030), acting as the central point of contact between the various Muon sub‑projects and ATLAS Technical Coordination. Your daily work will involve synchronising the installation and integration tasks of all Muon‑related activities, keeping a close eye on the overall schedule, spotting risks early and ensuring clear communication among the many teams involved. You will draft and maintain the integrated LS3 timetable, lead regular coordination meetings, collect status updates, and produce detailed reports and documentation. In addition, you will manage technical work inside the UX15 cavern, resolve interface conflicts, and support detector groups to meet their milestones efficiently. The role requires a doctoral degree or an equivalent level of expertise in physics or a closely related discipline. You must have a proven track record of coordinating large‑scale detector or comparable scientific installations, as well as experience in organising and directing multi‑team programmes. Demonstrated ability to handle complex technical projects, balance competing priorities and overcome planning or resource constraints is essential. Familiarity with safety systems and related technical infrastructure is also mandatory. Fluency in spoken and written English is required, together with a willingness to acquire French language skills. A valid driver's licence and the capacity to work nights, weekends and official holidays when the organization's needs dictate are also compulsory. Experience with installation, integration, commissioning or maintenance work in major scientific facilities is regarded as an added advantage, as is knowledge of gas‑based particle detection technologies, testing and validation of detector and accelerator components, and the assembly of infrastructure for experimental setups. The position is fully onsite, involves work in radiation zones and underground environments, and demands a medical clearance before a contract can be confirmed. The appointment is a four‑year limited‑duration contract (potentially convertible to a permanent role), with a 40‑hour work week, tax‑free salary, generous leave, health insurance, pension participation and relocation support. What the role asks for: - PhD or equivalent in Physics or related field - Proven coordination of large detector installations - Experience planning and managing multi‑team projects - Experience with safety systems and related infrastructure - Fluent spoken and written English - Commitment to learn French - Valid driving licence - Availability for nights, weekends and holidays when required
