Legartis, a Zurich‑based company, is building an AI‑driven platform that reshapes how legal teams draft, negotiate and close contracts. The firm combines product engineers with practising lawyers to create tools that turn customer‑defined workflows into automated solutions. The opening is for a Legal AI Engineer who will act as the bridge between client needs and the technical team, ensuring the product delivers real‑world value. On a daily basis the role involves joining sales and expert calls to capture the nuances of a client's legal process, then converting those insights into detailed specifications, edge‑case scenarios and acceptance criteria for engineers. The engineer also writes, tests and releases AI‑powered "agent skills" and playbooks that address the identified workflows, builds evaluation frameworks to prove improvements, and diagnoses AI failures at the prompt level. In addition, the person creates repeatable demo environments and a skill library so that sales and customer‑success teams can operate independently, while stepping in for complex legal or compliance questions that arise. The position requires a law degree focused on commercial contracts, preferably a German qualification such as a Bachelor, Master or Staatsexamen, or an equivalent credential from another jurisdiction. Fluency in both German and English is mandatory, with German being non‑negotiable because the primary customers are DACH‑based legal teams. Candidates must have hands‑on experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating German commercial contracts and be comfortable speaking as an equal with general counsel. A solid technical background is essential: a proven record of building tools, deep familiarity with large language models, and competence with scripting, version control and APIs are strongly valued. The role also calls for a commercial or entrepreneurial track record, whether through running a freelance practice, launching a legal‑tech product or supporting enterprise sales engagements. Legartis offers a highly autonomous environment where ownership is expected rather than assigned. The team consists of product builders and lawyers who prioritize substance over hype, and success is measured by how often the engineer's work can be deployed without their direct involvement and by the resulting adoption and expansion rates. The position is based in Zurich, providing access to a vibrant tech ecosystem while serving a client base across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Candidates who have published their work or have a history of supporting sales pilots will find those experiences especially relevant. What the role asks for: - German‑qualified law degree with commercial contracts focus - Excellent German language proficiency - Excellent English language proficiency - Proven experience building AI/LLM tools - Hands‑on work with German commercial contracts - Ability to discuss legal matters with General Counsel - Demonstrated commercial or entrepreneurial responsibility - Experience supporting enterprise sales demos or pilots (nice‑to‑have) - Published technical or legal work (nice‑to‑have) - Proficiency with scripting, Git and APIs (nice‑to‑have)
