CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is offering a post‑doctoral research fellowship in applied physics and engineering. The role sits within the Accelerator Systems department, where scientists and engineers develop and optimise the complex accelerator infrastructure that enables world‑leading particle‑physics experiments. The fellow will design, develop and optimise beam‑transfer systems for CERN's accelerator complex and future projects. Daily tasks involve performing accelerator‑physics studies such as beam‑optics design, particle tracking and multi‑physics simulations, creating functional specifications that balance physics requirements with engineering constraints, and implementing modern commissioning strategies that rely on automation, numerical optimisation and data‑driven techniques. The position also requires analysing beam and system performance to enhance beam quality, operational efficiency and overall reliability. Candidates must hold a PhD in Applied Physics and Engineering (or be within six months of completing it) and possess a strong background in applied physics, engineering or a closely related discipline. Proven research experience in applied physics and engineering, especially related to experimental systems, is essential. Applicants need a good knowledge of English or French, must be nationals of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, and must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. The post‑doctoral contract is limited to 24 months, with a possible extension to 36 months, and the stipend is 7 004 CHF net per month together with comprehensive health coverage, pension membership and various family allowances. The fellowship offers a unique international research environment, encouraging collaboration across large, multidisciplinary teams. Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, the capacity to work both independently and as part of shared project objectives, and effective scientific communication are required. While not mandatory, a motivation to pursue a research or academic career and an interest in contributing to large‑scale experimental programmes are regarded as valuable. What the role asks for: - PhD in Applied Physics and Engineering (or within 6 months) - National of CERN Member State or Associate Member State - No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract - Good knowledge of English or French - ≤3 years post‑PhD research experience (up to 6 years exceptional) - Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills - Ability to work collaboratively in large, international teams - Research experience in applied physics and engineering
