Doctoral Student Programme 2027-1

The Doctoral Student Programme 2027‑1 offers a place to pursue a PhD while working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where cutting‑edge science, technology and innovation intersect. As a member of an international community of specialists, you will conduct research that contributes directly to CERN’s scientific agenda and to your university thesis. During the appointment you will carry out your doctoral investigations in partnership with CERN and your home institution, taking part in ongoing work across applied physics, computing, engineering or related technical domains. You will regularly record and share your findings, presenting results as required for academic and research milestones, and you will collaborate daily with world‑class scientists, engineers and technicians within a diverse, multidisciplinary team. Candidates must be enrolled in a doctoral programme in a discipline such as applied physics, engineering, computer science or a comparable field, and must have already begun their studies. Eligibility is limited to nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States (excluding the listed exceptions). Proficiency in English or French is required, as is a solid theoretical grounding in the chosen area, a keen interest in practical implementation, curiosity, precision and a proactive learning attitude. Effective communication and the ability to function well in a multicultural setting are essential. The contract runs from 12 to 36 months, renewable up to three years and potentially extendable to four consecutive years to allow university time. Work is fully onsite in Geneva, 40 hours per week, with a tax‑free monthly stipend of CHF 3 907, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual shutdown, comprehensive CERN health coverage, family supplements where applicable, and travel support on arrival. The ideal start date is 1 April 2027, and applications close on 16 October 2026.
