Applied Physicist (EP-ATL-TRK-2026-192-LD)

CERN is recruiting an Applied Physicist to join the ATLAS Group, where the team is upgrading the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector. The position focuses on the integration of electronics for the new RPC chambers that will form the inner layer of the barrel muon system, and includes installing and commissioning these detectors inside the ATLAS cavern. The daily work involves leading the production and validation of electronics boards such as front‑end, low‑voltage and connection modules. You will organise quality‑assurance activities, help embed the boards into RPC chambers, and take part in testing fully equipped chambers while troubleshooting any problematic units. In addition, you will coordinate the testing of chambers before and after they are installed, act as the primary liaison between the RPC project and Technical Coordination during installation, and oversee the commissioning phase after the detectors are in place. Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent experience in physics or a related discipline, and possess strong expertise in designing, debugging and operating fast electronics for gaseous detectors. Proven experience in commissioning gaseous detectors, solid knowledge of gas‑detector physics, and the ability to lead small‑to‑medium teams are essential. Required technical skills include front‑end electronics design, simulation for analog sensors, testing of detector and accelerator components, performance optimisation, and detector assembly. Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a willingness to learn French, and a valid driving licence is needed.
