Shipping Officer (SCE-SSC-SC-2026-217-GRAE)

CERN’s Shipping Unit is looking for a Shipping Officer to manage the worldwide movement of goods by road, air, sea and rail. In this role you will support the laboratory’s global supply chain, handling everything from chemicals and radioactive materials to dual‑use items, and ensuring that each shipment complies with the relevant international rules. Your daily work will involve checking and correcting transport requests, arranging import and export consignments, and preparing the necessary customs and dangerous‑goods paperwork. You will liaise with carriers, freight forwarders and internal customers, monitor the progress of shipments, and provide advice on the most suitable logistics solutions. Additional duties include drafting quotations, approving invoices, settling claims or delivery disputes, and contributing to the improvement of shipping procedures and tools while delivering high‑quality customer service. The position requires a candidate who has some practical experience in coordinating international transport operations, including customer‑facing tasks, and a basic familiarity with Incoterms®. You should be able to write clear procedures, communicate effectively in both English and French, and demonstrate strong organisational abilities. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word is expected. Applicants must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, hold a general secondary education diploma, and have no more than two years of professional experience since graduation in Commercial Business Administration or a related field. Prior CERN fellow or graduate contracts disqualify you. The contract lasts 24 months, with the possibility of extending to 36 months, and starts on 1 January 2027. Work is hybrid, based at CERN, with a 40‑hour week. Compensation includes a tax‑free monthly stipend of CHF 4 687, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual shutdown, comprehensive health insurance, pension membership, family allowances, relocation support and on‑the‑job training, including language courses.
