The role of a Fula / Fulani / Peul Interpreter at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) involves facilitating communication in humanitarian contexts. The organization collaborates with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and their International Federation to ensure a coordinated and effective humanitarian response. The main day-to-day responsibilities include oral interpretation between Fula/Fulani/Peul and French during confidential interviews, institutional dissemination, and dialogue with authorities. This role also involves written translation of Fula/Fulani/Peul language materials into French, as well as analysis and reporting on conditions of detention and other relevant matters. The interpreter may also support other protection activities as needed. To qualify for this role, candidates must have an excellent command of both French and Fula/Fulani/Peul at a C1 level. A minimum of two years of professional experience is required, with previous interpreter or translator experience being an advantage. Candidates must be strongly motivated by humanitarian work and able to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments. They should also be open-minded and adaptable. Nice-to-have skills include proficiency in other ICRC operational languages such as English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Portuguese, as well as proficiency in Hausa. A university education or degree in interpretation or translation is also an advantage. The role is based in West Africa and involves unaccompanied postings for the first two missions, each lasting a minimum of 12 months. Candidates must be in good health, possess a driving license for manual transmission vehicles, and be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings.
