Internship - Experimental Data Science for Gas Sensing and Time-Series Analytics

VAT Group, the world’s leading supplier of high‑performance vacuum valves, offers an internship that blends experimental work with data‑science and machine‑learning techniques. Based in Haag, St. Gallen, the role supports the creation of intelligent vacuum systems used in semiconductor processing equipment worldwide. During the placement you will become acquainted with vacuum technology, gas dynamics and sensor hardware, then help set up and run experiments in the company’s vacuum test laboratory. You will design experiments using a structured Design of Experiments methodology, gather multivariate time‑series data from various sensors, and build preprocessing pipelines for synchronization, filtering, segmentation and outlier handling. The internship also involves analysing the links between sensor signals, gas properties and process conditions, and developing data‑driven approaches for feature extraction, classification, regression, monitoring and anomaly detection. Results are validated with independent tests, documented thoroughly, and presented to engineers and researchers. The position requires you to be enrolled in an MSc programme in data science, machine learning, physics, mathematics, mechanical, electrical, chemical, control, mechatronics engineering or a closely related discipline. You should possess a basic understanding of data analysis, statistics, signal processing or machine learning, and be comfortable coding in Python or MATLAB. A genuine interest in combining hands‑on experimentation with modelling, the ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary R&D team, systematic thinking and good written and spoken English are essential. Additional experience that would be advantageous includes prior work with time‑series or sensor‑data analytics, familiarity with tools such as scikit‑learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow or MATLAB, and knowledge of Design of Experiments, feature engineering, model validation or uncertainty estimation.
