PhD position NCCR Genesis: remote sensing of microorganisms in extreme environments

The position is a four‑year PhD project within the NCCR Genesis programme, hosted by the University of Bern’s Centre for Space and Habitability. The research focuses on remote sensing of microorganisms that thrive in extreme conditions, linking space‑science questions with microbiological expertise through a close partnership with Prof. Pilar Junier’s Microbiology Laboratory. As a doctoral candidate you will join an interdisciplinary team that pursues space‑related investigations, working hand‑in‑hand with the microbiology group where experimental measurements are carried out. The role involves contributing to the design and execution of optical experiments, analysing data, and collaborating on publications, while benefiting from dedicated travel, computing and publishing support. Applicants must hold an MSc in physics or engineering, demonstrate creativity, motivation and a collaborative spirit, and possess strong spoken and written English. Prior experience with optics is considered advantageous, and a basic grasp of polarisation is viewed as a plus. The appointment offers a competitive salary that rises from CHF 50,042 to CHF 53,263 over the contract, along with child allowance, parental leave, visa assistance for internationals, and access to mentorship, career counselling and teaching opportunities. Situated in Bern, the position provides a high quality of life, rich cultural offerings and ample chances for outdoor recreation.
