Roche's Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED) division creates breakthrough medicines to address the world's most pressing health challenges. Within the Therapeutic Modalities (TMo) organization, the Small Molecule Research Discovery team seeks a Research Associate in Cellular Assay Development to help translate disease biology into high‑quality drug candidates. In this laboratory‑focused role you will design, optimise and qualify cell‑based functional assays, including sophisticated three‑dimensional models, using platforms such as HTRF, AlphaLISA, luminescence and high‑content imaging. You will shrink these assays into high‑density formats (384‑ and 1536‑well plates), fine‑tuning performance metrics like Z′‑factor and signal‑to‑background. Routine responsibilities include maintaining a diverse portfolio of mammalian cell lines, primary cells, continuous lines and induced pluripotent stem cells, while performing rigorous quality control. Close collaboration with the High‑Throughput Screening and Profiling group will ensure smooth transfer of new assays onto robotic systems, and you will generate reliable data to support structure‑activity relationship studies. Complex screening results will be interpreted with tools such as Genedata Screener and Spotfire, and all procedures will be meticulously recorded in electronic lab notebooks. The position requires a Master's degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or a closely related discipline, together with at least five years of industry experience focused on advanced cell culture and assay development. Candidates must have a proven track record of miniaturising workflows to 384‑ and 1536‑well plate formats and of operating automated liquid‑handling equipment. Strong competence in data analysis, statistical evaluation and clear communication of scientific findings to multidisciplinary teams is essential, as is fluency in English and the ability to adapt resourcefully to a dynamic laboratory environment. Experience with induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation, three‑dimensional cellular models or Design‑of‑Experiments methodology is considered advantageous. The role is entirely laboratory‑based, offering the chance to work within a highly engaged, cross‑functional team that values curiosity, responsibility and humility. Roche promotes an inclusive culture where every voice matters, supporting both personal and professional growth while contributing to a healthier future for patients worldwide. What the role asks for: - Master's degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or related field - Minimum 5 years industry research experience in cell‑based assay development - Proven ability to miniaturize assays to 384‑ and 1536‑well plates - Experience using automated liquid‑handling systems for assay workflows - Strong data analysis, statistical evaluation and clear scientific presentation skills - Fluency in English with excellent interpersonal communication - Nice‑to‑have: hands‑on iPSC differentiation, 3D models or DoE methodology
