CERN is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join the team that creates and refines hardware and software for control, protection and safety systems used in its experimental facilities. The role supports the operation and reliability of the magnet systems for the LHC experiments, ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb, as well as other essential infrastructure. On a daily basis you will design and document low‑voltage power and control circuits for magnet safety, control and auxiliary services. You will take part in the implementation, testing and commissioning of electrical installations for upcoming LHC upgrades, and help validate circuits used for control and protection. Collaboration with physicists, engineers and technicians is essential to produce reliable technical solutions and to generate the documentation needed for the operation of critical systems. The position requires a university degree (Bachelor's or Master's) in Electrical Technical Engineering or a related discipline, with no more than two years of professional experience since graduation. Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate State and must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Relevant experience includes work on electrical engineering, automation or technical projects, exposure to circuit design and documentation, and proficiency with engineering design tools such as EPLAN or an equivalent. Laboratory testing, commissioning or troubleshooting experience, as well as participation in multi‑stakeholder technical projects, are also required. A solid understanding of low‑voltage power distribution, the ability to read schematics and technical documents, and basic knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation and industrial control systems are essential. Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication and teamwork skills are needed to succeed in the multidisciplinary environment. Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should be prepared to learn French. The contract lasts 24 months with a possible extension to 36 months, full‑time (40 h/week) and fully onsite. The role includes regular stand‑by duty covering nights, Sundays and official holidays, work in radiation areas, underground interventions and residence near CERN's installations. A valid driving licence is required. CERN offers a monthly net stipend of CHF 5 266 or CHF 5 793 depending on the degree, 30 days of paid leave plus a two‑week annual closure, comprehensive health insurance, pension membership, family allowances, a relocation package and on‑the‑job training including language courses. What the role asks for: - National of CERN Member or Associate State - Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Technical Engineering (or related) - ≤ 2 years professional experience since graduation - No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract - Experience in electrical engineering, automation or technical projects - Exposure to electrical circuit design and documentation - Proficiency with EPLAN or equivalent electrical design software - Laboratory testing, commissioning or troubleshooting experience - Participation in collaborative technical projects with multiple stakeholders - Knowledge of low‑voltage power distribution and control systems - Ability to read electrical schematics and technical documents - Basic knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation and industrial control systems - Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities - Good communication and teamwork in multidisciplinary settings - Spoken and written English proficiency - Commitment to learn French (nice‑to‑have) - Valid driving licence - Availability for stand‑by duty including nights, weekends, holidays
