Data Science Officer

UniBE is a dynamic organization that offers flexible working models and ample opportunities for independent work. The Data Science Officer will support the PAGES working groups in data science tasks, including curation, harmonization, and machine learning/AI applications. The role involves managing the Data Stewardship Scholarship, ensuring data curation adheres to FAIR/LiPD standards, and liaising with repositories. Additionally, the officer will co-edit the Past Global Changes Magazine and Horizons, contribute to publications, and coordinate international activities, representing PAGES. The main responsibilities include data curation, managing the Data Stewardship Scholarship, and ensuring data meets FAIR/LiPD standards. The officer will also co-edit magazines, contribute to publications, and handle international coordination and reporting. The role requires strong communication skills to explain methods to non-specialists and excellent written and spoken English. German language skills are useful but not required. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in paleoscience, data science, statistics, or a related computational field. Strong skills in R/Python, version control, and reproducible workflows are essential. Experience with large, heterogeneous proxy/geological databases and handling incomplete, noisy, or unevenly sampled time series is crucial. Familiarity with PANGAEA/NOAA/Neotoma, LiPD, and age-depth modeling is beneficial, as is proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
