CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is renowned for its groundbreaking work in nuclear research, bringing together professionals from various fields to push the boundaries of science and technology. The main day-to-day responsibilities include developing software to configure, control, and monitor the Trigger and Timing Control and Distribution System (TCDS). This involves close interaction with hardware components and collaboration with electronics engineers, physicists, and other stakeholders. The role also includes setting up and operating DAQ test systems, maintaining software repositories, and contributing to the installation and commissioning of the Phase-2 DAQ system. Additionally, the developer will provide support to the CMS community for the commissioning of sub-detector data acquisition components. To qualify for this role, candidates must have proficiency in designing and developing complex applications in Python and C++, including user-facing and REST-based interfaces. Experience with system programming and interaction with computer hardware is essential. Candidates should also have experience in collaborative software development and with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practices. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience in Software Engineering or Applied Physics is required. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. Nice-to-have skills include familiarity with firmware development using hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog, and some exposure to the challenges of data acquisition systems in modern high energy physics (HEP) experiments. The role is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and offers a hybrid work mode. The team at CERN values diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where every contribution is valued. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a monthly net stipend, paid leave, health insurance, and a relocation package.
