Database Administrator (DBA)

The Database Administrator role is centred on safeguarding and evolving the organisation's enterprise data platforms. The company runs a mix of on‑premises, cloud and hybrid database environments, supporting critical business applications and ensuring data remains available, performant and secure throughout its lifecycle. Day‑to‑day, the DBA will advise business and application teams on optimal database design and technology choices, then install, configure, upgrade and maintain relational and cloud‑native systems. Core duties include monitoring performance, capacity and utilisation; implementing backup, recovery, replication and high‑availability mechanisms; and contributing to disaster‑recovery and business‑continuity plans. The role also involves troubleshooting complex incidents, tuning queries, automating provisioning and administration through scripting, and integrating databases into DevOps pipelines and Infrastructure‑as‑Code workflows. Collaboration spans development, infrastructure, security and data‑engineering groups, with a focus on sharing modern practices and maintaining clear documentation and operating procedures. The employer requires proven expertise in administering major enterprise database platforms, specifically Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, and a solid grasp of relational concepts, SQL and routine database operations. Candidates must have designed and supported high‑availability architectures, managed backup/recovery and replication, and demonstrated performance‑tuning and capacity‑management skills. Strong knowledge of security, identity management and access controls, together with experience applying compliance and operational controls across the database lifecycle, is essential. The role expects six to ten years of relevant experience or equivalent demonstrable expertise, and a bachelor's degree or comparable professional background. Participation in incident, problem, change and lifecycle management processes, as well as the ability to document solutions and communicate with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, are also mandatory. While not compulsory, the team values experience with modern cloud architectures, containerised database deployments such as OpenShift, and familiarity with automation, scripting (Python, Bash or PowerShell) and monitoring tools. Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and cloud‑native database services is advantageous, as is a collaborative, improvement‑focused mindset and a commitment to continuous learning and professional accreditation.
