The role of Software Developer - Beam Optics is within the Linear and Non-Linear Optics (LNO) Section of CERN's Accelerator and Beam Physics (ABP) Group. CERN is renowned for its pioneering work in nuclear research, particularly with the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The role involves developing and maintaining software tools that ensure the precise measurement and correction of beam optics, which is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of the HL-LHC. The main day-to-day responsibilities include maintaining and extending the core OMC framework and toolset, exploring software solutions to enhance optics measurement and corrections, and updating accelerator model creation and correction algorithms. Additionally, the role involves developing new GUIs and analysis tools, participating in optics measurements, and exploring the automation of key measurement and analysis workflows. To qualify for this role, candidates must have a background in programming and software design, with specific experience in Python. Familiarity with version control systems like GitHub and experience in GUI development are essential. A professional background in Physics or Software Engineering, along with a Master's degree and 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience or a PhD with up to 3 years of experience, is required. Proficiency in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language, is also necessary. Nice-to-have skills include knowledge of particle accelerator physics and operation. The role offers a hybrid work environment in Geneva, Switzerland, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, communication, and knowledge sharing. The position involves working 40 hours per week, with the possibility of night, Sunday, and holiday shifts as needed. The contract duration is 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months. What the role asks for: - A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. - A professional background in Physics, Software Engineering, or a related field. - Experience in Python. - Familiarity with version control systems and collaborative workflows (Github). - Experience in GUI development. - Proficiency in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language. - Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
