Join CERN's Theory Department as a Research Fellow in theoretical physics, where you will design and lead an independent research programme at the cutting edge of fundamental science. CERN is the world's premier particle‑physics laboratory, fostering a highly collaborative, international community that drives advances in our understanding of the universe. In this fellowship you will conduct original theoretical‑physics research, develop innovative models, and interpret experimental results. You will contribute to CERN's broader theory agenda, work closely with both theorists and experimentalists on particle‑physics and fundamental‑interaction projects, and shape your own research direction within the fellowship framework. Regular participation in seminars, workshops, and training activities will be part of daily life. The position requires a PhD in theoretical physics (or a scheduled defence before the start date) and no more than six years of post‑doctoral research experience. Candidates must possess a solid background in theoretical particle physics or a closely related discipline, and have research experience that aligns with the activities of CERN's Theory Department. Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, effective scientific communication, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of large, multinational teams are essential. Additional strengths that will enhance your application include a genuine motivation to join a leading international research environment, eagerness to develop personal research interests within the fellowship, and the ability to contribute to high‑impact scientific outcomes. While not mandatory, these attributes are valued and can set you apart. The role is based onsite in Geneva, Switzerland, on a 24‑month contract (extendable to 36 months) with a 40‑hour work week. Fellows receive a monthly net stipend of CHF 7 004 or CHF 7 425, 30 days of paid leave, comprehensive health coverage, pension membership, relocation support, and access to on‑the‑job training, including language classes. What the role asks for: - PhD in theoretical physics (defence scheduled if needed) - ≤ 6 years post‑PhD research experience - Strong background in theoretical particle physics - Research experience aligned with CERN Theory Department - Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills - Effective scientific communication abilities - Ability to work independently and in large international teams - Nice‑to‑have: Motivation to join leading international research environment - Nice‑to‑have: Eagerness to develop own research interests within fellowship
