DuckDuckGo is seeking a Senior Web Compatibility Engineer to join their Web Dependability Engineering team. The company, known for its online protection services, offers a browser, search engine, and Privacy Pro, with a mission to enhance online trust. The team, which is remote-first, consists of over 300 members who take full ownership of their projects, from planning to execution and post-project review. The Senior Web Compatibility Engineer will focus on ensuring websites function smoothly across DuckDuckGo's browsers on various platforms, including Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. This role involves reverse-engineering site detection methods, shimming browser APIs, and building LLM agent pipelines to automatically address site issues. The engineer will also lead the triage process, debug complex issues, and develop durable fixes to prevent user churn. To qualify for this role, candidates must have at least seven years of experience in building and debugging complex web applications using vanilla JavaScript. They should possess a deep understanding of web standards, web components, and browser APIs. Additional experience with languages like Swift, Kotlin, C#, C++, or Python is beneficial. The role requires advanced skills in reverse-engineering obfuscated third-party code and reducing issues to minimal test cases. A passion for bug hunting and tracing issues to their root cause is essential. Nice-to-have skills include experience with native or desktop clients and a strong interest in automating repetitive tasks and building agentic tooling. The role also values the ability to lead complex, ambiguous projects with minimal oversight and clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The position is based in a remote-first environment, with an average full-time commitment of 40 hours per week. Travel is expected at least twice a year for team meetups and retreats, and candidates must be willing to attend meetings via video conferencing. What the role asks for: - 7+ years of experience building and debugging complex web applications with vanilla JavaScript. - Detailed knowledge of web standards, web components, and browser APIs. - Advanced ability to reverse-engineer obfuscated third-party code and reduce issues to minimal test cases. - Experience triaging issues, leading incident response, and communicating clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders. - Experience shipping code beyond the web, like native or desktop clients. - Ability to lead complex, ambiguous projects with little to no oversight. - Willingness to travel at least two times a year for team meetups and retreats. - Ability to attend meetings on camera via video conferencing.
