The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), operated by ETH Zurich and based in Lugano and Zürich, is looking for an HPC Systems Software Engineer to advance its OpenCHAMI project. OpenCHAMI is an open‑source framework that brings cloud‑style automation, provisioning and security to large‑scale high‑performance computing clusters. The position is a fixed‑term role with a workload of 80 % to 100 % and can be performed from either of the two sites. In this role you will extend the OpenCHAMI platform so that it satisfies the operational needs of CSCS's current and future supercomputers. Daily tasks include writing and reviewing code, building automation pipelines, and creating workflows that simplify provisioning, configuration, monitoring and maintenance at scale. You will work hand‑in‑hand with the HPC operations teams to translate their requirements into robust, maintainable services, and you will actively participate in the open‑source community through issue tracking, code reviews and technical discussions. Documentation of architecture, implementation guides and best‑practice procedures will also be part of the job. The ideal candidate possesses a solid engineering background and can make sound technical judgments. You should be self‑driven, proactive and comfortable collaborating in a team that follows Agile principles. A strong problem‑solving attitude, clear communication skills and the ability to bridge gaps between different domains are essential. The centre values curiosity and a willingness to learn on the job more than a perfect match of every skill. While no single technology stack is mandatory, experience with Go, Git‑based development, CI/CD tools such as GitLab or GitHub, container runtimes like Docker or Podman, and modern testing or DevOps practices will be advantageous. The contract lasts two years, offering the chance to influence the management of next‑generation supercomputers and to contribute to open‑source projects that have a global impact. You will join a diverse, international community of researchers and engineers, working in a supportive environment that encourages growth and innovation. What the role asks for: - Strong technical foundation - Self‑motivated and proactive attitude - Collaborative teamwork skills - Strong problem‑solving mindset - Clear communication abilities - Ability to work in Agile self‑organising teams - Experience with Go programming language (nice‑to‑have) - Experience with Git and CI/CD pipelines (nice‑to‑have) - Experience with Docker or Podman containers (nice‑to‑have) - Familiarity with testing frameworks and DevOps/GitOps (nice‑to‑have) - Test‑driven development experience (nice‑to‑have)
