Head of China Trading

Torq Commodities is looking for a senior trading professional to create and head its China trading platform. The firm operates in the front‑office commodity market and expects the new leader to build a self‑sustaining profit centre that serves Chinese customers and suppliers while aligning with the broader international business. The role revolves around constructing and managing a profitable physical‑commodity book that focuses on China, sourcing, negotiating and closing deals, and overseeing margins, risk and overall profitability. Daily duties include expanding a network of buyers, sellers, processors, importers and exporters, spotting and acting on fresh trading chances across domestic and overseas markets, and reporting revenue and gross‑profit growth. The leader will also shape the China trading strategy, recruit and mentor a dedicated team, and provide market analysis on price trends, freight, regulations and trade flows to senior management. Interaction with senior market participants and representation at industry gatherings form part of the stakeholder responsibilities. Candidates must bring more than ten years of commodity‑trading experience with deep exposure to the Chinese market, a proven record of running a profitable P&L, and an established network of Chinese customers and suppliers. Direct experience in originating and executing physical‑commodity transactions, strong commercial negotiation abilities and fluency in Mandarin at a native level together with fluent English are mandatory. A background that includes responsibility for a trading book’s profitability is essential. Preferred experience includes work with agricultural products such as coffee, nuts, grains, soft commodities or energy, as well as prior involvement in launching a new trading desk or regional operation within an international trading house.
