Short Term Internship 2026

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, invites undergraduate students in technical or administrative disciplines to join its short‑term internship programme in Geneva. The institute’s scientists and engineers operate the world’s most complex instruments to explore the fundamental particles and forces that shape the universe, and it offers a limited number of on‑the‑job training placements lasting from one to six months. Interns will be embedded in active teams, receiving practical instruction from CERN experts while contributing to projects aligned with their field of study. The experience is designed to give hands‑on exposure to the laboratory’s scientific and support activities, with daily tasks shaped by the specific department hosting the trainee. Candidates must be citizens of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, at least 18 years old, and enrolled full‑time in a technical or administrative programme leading to a diploma, bachelor’s or master’s degree (PhD candidates are excluded). Their major should belong to areas such as applied physics, computing, engineering, instrumentation, materials science, radiation protection, safety, surveying, ultra‑high vacuum, scientific communication, or administrative subjects like translation, accounting, legal services, HR, librarianship or logistics. Proficiency in English or French is required, and the university must provide comprehensive insurance covering medical and accident risks in the Geneva region. The internship includes a monthly stipend of 1,593 Swiss francs, adjusted proportionally for partial months, and paid leave for assignments of four months or longer. Working in a highly diverse, inclusive environment, interns become part of a community that values varied perspectives while contributing to cutting‑edge research that pushes the boundaries of knowledge.
