COBOL Mainframe Developer - Remote

The contract opening is for a remote COBOL Mainframe Developer, joining a company that creates artificial‑intelligence tools aimed at teaching and assessing work with legacy mainframe software. The team focuses on improving how AI handles historic codebases that still power many large enterprises. Day‑to‑day duties involve examining existing COBOL programs, associated copybooks and JCL scripts, then producing well‑structured, production‑ready COBOL according to given specifications. You will troubleshoot logical errors, clarify business rules and data flows, and assess AI‑generated code for accuracy, completeness and style. Building or reviewing test scenarios for these programs and delivering detailed feedback to refine the AI models are also key parts of the role. The position requires solid, hands‑on experience writing and reading COBOL without supervision. Familiarity with IBM z/OS environments is desirable, and knowledge of JCL, VSAM, DB2, CICS or copybooks adds value. Strong abilities in debugging and code review are essential, as is the capacity to communicate findings clearly in written English. Backgrounds in banking, insurance, government or other sectors that rely on legacy systems are considered advantageous. Ideal candidates have worked on production COBOL applications, can articulate legacy logic to both technical and non‑technical listeners, and feel comfortable judging code quality and edge‑case behavior. Experience modernising extensive legacy codebases is a plus.
