What qualification do I need as a Machine Operator in Switzerland?
Typically an industry-related EFZ - such as Food Technologist, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Technologist, Plastics Technologist or Production Mechanic - though many companies also accept EBA training combined with several years of line experience.
Always state your qualification using its official title and year, for example 'Food Technologist EFZ, 2013' or 'Chemical and Pharmaceutical Technologist EFZ, 2015'. If you have a two-year basic training (EBA) or a foreign qualification, state this transparently and note whether it has been recognised by the SBFI. If you lack a relevant EFZ, emphasise your practical experience: equipment type, cycle rate, shift model and scope of responsibility tell hiring managers more than the title alone.
Further training carries a lot of weight in this profession: a Production Specialist with a Federal Professional Diploma, industrial foreman, technical business assistant, or a Techniker HF in process engineering all show that you're heading towards shift leadership or process responsibility. Shorter credentials count too - level 2 HACCP training, GMP fundamentals, explosion protection, LOTO instruction, hygienic design, or a basic PLC course for Siemens S7.
Mandatory certificates deserve their own block: forklift licence per SUVA requirements with category (R1, R2, R4), crane or aerial work platform licence, first aider IVR level 2, and fire safety assistant. Include the year issued and, if applicable, the refresher date for each, so HR can see at a glance that the permit is current.
How do I describe my hands-on production experience convincingly?
For each position, first describe the equipment and shift model, then list three to four measurable results relating to OEE, changeover time, scrap or downtime.
A Machine Operator CV without figures stays invisible. In the context line, state the hard facts: equipment type (PET blow-moulding, filling and labelling line, flow-wrap, cartoning or tableting machine), cycle rate such as 24'000 bottles per hour, number of formats, shift model (2-, 3- or 4-shift) and team size. Then list results: 'OEE from 74 to 84 percent', 'changeover time from 45 to 22 minutes', 'unplanned downtime from 46 to 21 hours per quarter', 'scrap from 1.8 to 1.1 percent'.
Also show the extent of your technical independence. Phrases such as 'acknowledged and analysed Siemens S7 fault messages myself, resolving 85 percent of faults without maintenance support', 'replaced valves, grippers and sensors', or 'adjusted recipe parameters after approval' set you apart from a pure operator. Equally important: cleaning and documentation - CIP programmes, hygiene records, batch records, deviation reports, release checks on the metal detector and check weigher.
Mention the standards you've worked under, as they act as industry-specific door-openers: HACCP, IFS Food, BRCGS, ISO 22000, ISO 9001, GMP classes in pharmaceutical production, cleanroom behaviour, or requirements under the prepackaging and quantity-labelling regulations. If you were the audit contact on the line, state it - including the outcome, such as 'five audits with no major non-conformities'.
How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?
Two pages is the standard, and a friendly portrait photo is still customary in Swiss industry and expected by many employers.
Keep it to two pages: page one with profile, key facts, current position and core skills, page two with further positions, education, certificates and languages. If you have more than ten years of experience, summarise older entry-level jobs in a single line. Use month and year consistently throughout (03.2020 - present) and explain any gaps briefly and factually, such as military service, further training or family time.
Swiss specifics belong in the header: place of residence with canton, citizenship or permit (C, B, G cross-border commuter), phone number in the format 079 000 00 00, and a professional email address. For machine operators, two further details are gold: your willingness to work shifts, weekends and on-call duty, and your mobility - category B driving licence, own car, ability to reach the plant by 05:00. Also state your earliest possible start date and notice period.
Only state a salary expectation if requested in the job ad - and then be realistic and use Swiss notation, for example 'Salary expectation: CHF 78'000 to CHF 85'000 gross per year, including shift allowances'. Save the application as a PDF with a clear file name (Lebenslauf_Zbinden_Anlagenfuehrer.pdf), attach reference letters and copies of your forklift licence and EFZ certificate, and tailor your profile and skills to the equipment type mentioned in each job ad.

Marco Zbinden
Machine Operator / Line Operator, Food Technologist EFZ, Production Specialist with Federal Professional Diploma
Machine operator with 11 years of experience on fully automated filling and packaging lines in 3- and 4-shift operation (up to 24'000 bottles/h). I run lines including CIP cleaning, format changeovers and troubleshooting on Siemens S7 controls, and document batches in compliance with GMP and HACCP. As shift supervisor, I lead teams of 6 people, keep OEE stable above 82 percent, and train new starters on the equipment and safety regulations.
What sets me apart
Troubleshooting at the control system, not just the buttons: I read out Siemens S7 fault messages and WinCC trends myself, replace sensors, grippers and valves, and resolve around 85 percent of line faults without maintenance support - maintenance is only called in for electrical and PLC programming work.
Hygiene and CIP as a core competency: I run CIP/SIP programs, check caustic concentration, temperature and contact time, document rinse water samples, and have reduced the number of repeat microbiological findings from 9 to 1 per year over two years.
Systematically shortened format changeovers: Using SMED methodology, pre-set format parts and checklists, I reduced changeover times on three lines by an average of 40 percent, recovering around 6 hours of production time per week.
Training new staff and passing audits: I trained 14 temporary staff and 3 apprentices (Food Technologist EFZ) on the line, and was the shopfloor contact for 5 IFS Food and ISO 22000 audits - with no critical findings on my line.
Key achievements
OEE from 74 to 84 percent. Through systematic analysis of micro-stops at the labeller and infeed conveyor, and adjusted back-pressure settings, increased overall equipment effectiveness on the main line by 10 percentage points over 14 months - around 1'900 additional production hours per year.
Scrap reduced by 38 percent. New inspection routine on filling valves and cappers, plus daily checks of the metal detector and check weigher, reduced scrap from 1.8 to 1.1 percent, saving around CHF 92'000 per year in material costs.
Unplanned downtime halved. Introduced autonomous maintenance based on TPM: 22 checkpoints per shift, a lubrication schedule and a kanban system for wear parts - unplanned downtime fell from 46 to 21 hours per quarter.
