What qualification do you need as a Sales Engineer in Switzerland?
The classic Swiss combination is a technical vocational education or an FH engineering degree plus further commercial sales training.
The most common profiles are a Bachelor FH in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering or Industrial Engineering, as well as the path via a vocational apprenticeship as a polymechanic, automation technician or electronics technician followed by a qualification as Techniker HF or dipl. Techniker HF. ETH and university of applied sciences graduates from process, medical or civil engineering also gain access depending on the product. What matters is that your technical background matches the product you sell - for drive technology, electrical engineering counts; for process plants, chemical or process engineering.
On the sales side, Swiss employers clearly value the Sales Specialist with Federal Certificate of Proficiency (eidg. Fachausweis), the NDS HF Sales Management, the Sales Manager with Federal Diploma, or a CAS in Technical Sales. List these qualifications with their exact official title and year, as HR professionals and HR systems search specifically for these terms. Product-related certificates such as Machine Safety CE, ATEX explosion protection, Hygienic Design or manufacturer certifications also add credibility.
If you are moving into sales from engineering, service or commissioning, make this transition visible in your CV: mention customer contacts, negotiations led, quotes prepared and revenue responsibility, even if your job title was technical. A sentence such as 'calculated around 480 quotes per year' or 'commissioning at 30 customer sites including acceptance negotiations' demonstrates sales proximity better than any self-description.
How do you present your Sales Engineer work experience convincingly?
Every position needs three to four figures on revenue, margin, pipeline and closing rate, plus a line about the product sold and the territory.
Start each position with a context sentence: which product segment, which customer industries, which territory, which order sizes, and whether you were responsible for new business or existing accounts. Without this information, a reader cannot assess whether you sold components for CHF 5'000 or plant projects for CHF 1.5 million - and this is exactly what determines suitability for the vacant position.
Then quantify consistently: territory budget in CHF, target achievement in percent, gross margin, number of managed customers, average order value, closing rate, length of sales cycle and forecast accuracy. Technical metrics from your business cases are also effective, such as payback periods, energy savings in percent or OEE improvements, as they show that you can argue on equal footing with both engineers and buyers.
Add two to three points on processes and collaboration: quotation lead times, building configurators or CPQ logic, handover to project execution, FAT and SAT support, complaint handling, and inputs to product management. This demonstrates the dual role of the Sales Engineer as both salesperson and technical interface - an aspect almost always explicitly required in Swiss job postings.
How long should the CV be, and does it need a photo?
Two pages, a professional portrait photo, and clear information on languages, travel availability and work permit are standard in Switzerland.
Keep the CV to a maximum of two pages, or exceptionally three if you have over fifteen years of experience. The first page carries the profile, a summary with key figures, and the current position; summarize older positions briefly. A photo is still customary in Switzerland and is even expected for customer-facing sales roles - choose a current, professional portrait in business attire.
State your language skills with CEFR level and distinguish negotiation level from basic knowledge. For Sales Engineers, this is often decisive: German and English are mandatory, French opens Romandie and France, Italian opens Ticino. Equally important are a category B driving licence, stated travel availability in percent, possible home office arrangements, and - for foreign nationals - the permit type such as B or C, or EU/EFTA citizenship.
Write factually and without superlatives, avoid salary figures and reference contacts in the document, and instead write 'References available on request'. Adapt the profile and skills list to each job posting by including the product terms, standards and CRM systems mentioned. Save the file as a PDF with a clear name such as 'CV_Buehlmann_SalesEngineer.pdf' and keep your LinkedIn profile consistent, as recruiters in technical sales check both in parallel.

Marco Bühlmann
Sales Engineer Automation & Drive Technology, dipl. Ing. FH Mechanical Engineering, NDS Sales Management
Sales Engineer with 9 years of experience in technical B2B sales of automation and drive solutions to machine builders and process industry clients across the DACH region. I lead project sales from technical needs analysis through feasibility studies and specifications to framework agreements, and am responsible for a territory budget of CHF 6.8 million with a gross margin of 34 percent. Combination of engineering depth (PLC, safety technology per EN ISO 13849), calculation based on Total Cost of Ownership, and strong closing skills for capital goods with cycles of 6 to 18 months.
What sets me apart
Engineering expertise instead of catalogue selling: I create preliminary project concepts myself, including axis calculations, servo drive sizing and risk assessment per EN ISO 12100 - avoiding 3 to 4 weeks of waiting for internal engineering and often winning projects before the competition even delivers a quote.
Value selling with verifiable TCO: For every quote over CHF 100'000, I calculate energy consumption, OEE improvement and downtime costs into a TCO model - this has allowed me to achieve prices averaging 9 percent above the cheapest competitor.
Trilingual support for Swiss industrial regions: I support customers in German-speaking Switzerland, Romandie and southern Germany in their respective national language, including French-language quotation and acceptance documentation (FAT/SAT).
Bridge between customer, engineering and product management: From 60 documented customer requirements per year, I derive structured product requirement inputs; two resulting options now generate CHF 900'000 in annual revenue.
Key achievements
New process industry customer with CHF 1.4 million framework agreement. After 14 months of development, two pilot installations and a retrofit business case (22-month payback), closed a three-year framework agreement worth CHF 1.4 million for drives and safety controllers.
Margin increased from 28 to 34 percent. Through the introduction of standardized configuration and calculation logic in CPQ, a 40 percent reduction in special discounts, and consistent bundling of service and commissioning offerings.
Quotation lead time halved. Built a modular quotation toolkit with 18 pre-calculated application packages - reduced lead time from 9 to 4 working days and increased annual quotation volume by 35 percent.
