What education and certificates do Swiss employers expect from a Compliance Officer?
A degree in law or business, or banking training with further education, is standard, complemented by a recognised compliance or AML certification.
State your qualification the way it is understood in Switzerland: MLaw or BLaw from a university, a Bachelor's degree in Banking and Finance from a university of applied sciences, or vocational commercial training followed by a federal diploma of higher education. If you come from a banking background, the path via apprenticeship, a federal diploma in banking, and then a CAS is just as credible as a university degree. Always spell out the institution and year so that HR staff don't have to guess the level.
For certificates, what counts most in Switzerland is the CAS in Compliance Management (HWZ, ZHAW, or IFZ Lucerne University of Applied Sciences), the Certified Compliance Professional from the Compliance Academy, CAMS from ACAMS, and courses from the Swiss Institute for Financial Training. Those who have worked in client advisory can add an SAQ certification. Four certificates are enough; list the relevant ones rather than every half-day course you've attended.
Also show which regulations you're proficient in: AMLA, AMLO-FINMA, CDB 20, FinSA/FinIA and the related ordinances, FINMA circulars on auditing and operational risk, plus SECO sanctions and the FADP revision. Concrete references like these carry more weight than simply stating that you are 'regulatory savvy.'
How do you present your professional experience as a Compliance Officer effectively?
For each position, describe the regulatory framework, the business model and your control responsibilities, and back up every point with a number.
Add a short context line under each employer: type of institution, supervisory status, assets under management, number of employees, target markets and team size. A Compliance Officer at a regional bank with retail business works differently from a colleague at an asset manager with offshore clients. Without this context, no one can gauge how complex your cases were.
Quantify what is measurable in compliance: number of KYC files and periodic reviews reviewed, share of high-risk and PEP cases, monitoring alerts processed per month, reduction in false positives, number of MROS reports, number of key controls, closed audit findings, and attendance rates for your training sessions. Avoid confidential client details and work with aggregated figures.
Make your role in projects visible. State whether you led a FinSA project, were responsible for a cross-border manual, co-authored a FinIA licensing dossier, or introduced a new screening tool, and give the duration and outcome. If you were deputy MLRO or were personally responsible for filing reports, that belongs prominently in the first line of the position.
How long should the CV be, and should a photo and permit be included?
Two pages is the standard, a professional photo is still customary in Switzerland, and nationality or residence permit belong in the header.
Stick to a maximum of two pages, even with ten years of experience. The first twenty lines are decisive: a short profile, key facts at a glance, and the current position with the strongest figures. Summarise positions from more than fifteen years ago in a single line. Correct spelling and consistent dates are, in this profession, proof of competence, since you are applying for a control function.
A professional portrait photo in business attire is still expected at banks and insurers, though not mandatory. In the header, include place of residence with canton, nationality or permit type (C, B, G), plus phone number and email. Add your earliest possible start date and, if requested in the job ad, a salary expectation such as CHF 135'000 gross for a full-time position.
Adapt your choice of language to the institution: German for German-speaking Swiss firms, French for addresses in Geneva or Lausanne, and often English for international groups. State language levels according to the CEFR, since client contact and cross-border matters require genuine language skills. Finally, mention that references, diplomas and certificates are available on request, and avoid naming references without prior consent.

Nadine Bürgisser
Compliance Officer (Certified Compliance Professional, CAS Compliance Management HWZ)
Compliance Officer with nine years of experience in anti-money laundering and regulatory compliance at a private bank and a FINMA-supervised asset manager. Responsible for KYC onboarding of PEP and offshore structures, transaction monitoring under AMLA/AMLO-FINMA, and suspicious activity reports to MROS. Experienced in cross-border regulations, FinSA/FinIA implementation, and preparing for audits by the audit firm under FINMA Circular 2013/3.
What sets me apart
AMLA depth, not checklist compliance: Prepares beneficial ownership assessments for trusts, foundations, and domiciliary companies under CDB 20 and documents plausibility checks in an audit-proof manner for the external auditor.
Cross-border and market access: Maintains the cross-border manual for 14 target markets, including EU third-country rules, and trains client advisors on permitted travel and contact activities.
Implementing regulatory projects: Translated FinSA/FinIA, the FADP revision, and FINMA Circular 2023/1 (Operational Risks) into directives, controls, and test plans with clear owners and deadlines.
Bridge to the front office: Negotiates viable solutions with relationship managers instead of rejecting business outright: reduced rejection rate while maintaining control quality.
Key achievements
Onboarding turnaround time halved. Re-segmented the KYC process for corporate clients and streamlined the document catalogue: turnaround time reduced from 18 to 8 working days, for 1'400 files per year.
Reduced false positives in monitoring. Calibrated scenarios and thresholds in transaction monitoring and reparametrised 6 rules: false positives reduced from 2'900 to 1'050 alerts per quarter.
FINMA audit without findings. Completed the audit firm's review of AMLA controls with 0 material findings; closed 11 outstanding prior-year points within 5 months.
