Roche’s Ophthalmology team in Basel is seeking a Discovery Scientist focused on the neural retina and ocular disease. The group works on novel therapeutic strategies for major eye conditions such as dry AMD, neovascular forms, diabetic retinopathy and other retinal vascular disorders, aiming to translate early‑stage discoveries into life‑changing treatments. The scientist will drive target identification and validation by applying sophisticated in‑vitro and in‑vivo disease models and mining patient sample datasets. They will select and assess optimal therapeutic modalities, lead projects from target inception through to Phase II readiness, and coordinate cross‑functional efforts with bioinformatics, safety and translational medicine teams. Managing external collaborations and CRO activities, they will also present findings internally, publish in top‑tier journals, and represent Roche at international conferences, while ensuring laboratory safety and environmental standards. Candidates must hold a PhD in Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry or a related life‑science field and have completed a postdoctoral fellowship in vision research, neural retina, ophthalmology or a closely related area. They need deep expertise in retinal biology and disease mechanisms, with a proven record of experiments on ocular angiogenesis, fibrosis, inflammation or neurodegeneration. Hands‑on experience with animal handling or ocular procedures, or the development of advanced 2D/3D model systems, together with cell culture, –omics and basic bioinformatics skills, is required. Applicants should possess 2–3 years of additional experience in academic or industry drug discovery, a strong publication history, excellent organizational and English communication abilities, and an established network within the global ophthalmology community. Roche offers a culture that values personal expression, open dialogue and diverse perspectives, set within a collaborative Basel environment. The role provides the chance to influence a pipeline that could improve vision for millions, while working alongside a worldwide team dedicated to delivering life‑changing healthcare solutions.
